Reverence for life, even for the smallest creature
Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965)

This quote from the doctor, philosopher, evangelical theologian, musician and pacifist, who founded a hospital in Central Africa, was the humanistic guiding principle in Helena Scigala's life.

This section in the biography of Berlin graphic artist Helena Scigala provides a building block for two historical research gaps: on the one hand, for the perspective of gender history of the "Work Area Pankow" in the national professional association, and on the other hand, for the group biography of the Pankow circle of the Association of Visual Artists of Germany (VBKD 1950 to 1970) or the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR (VBK 1970 to 1990).

Methodologically, the following information represents the result of a systematic evaluation of sources that each meet scientific standards. The obvious differences in scope and depth of the presentation of results stem from the diversity of the sources consulted. For example, the gender-specific or group-biographical analysis of the catalog of a group exhibition can achieve a comparatively higher yield for the investigation than the examination of a lexicon article focused on an individual biography.
